On Saturday, August 30th, Big John McCarthy's Ultimate Training Academy will be holding open try outs for our mixed martial arts team. The BJMUTA MMA team is comprised of both amateur and professional fighters with a 29-5 fight record. The team has a dedicated coach, Brian Peterson, and holds private practices for the fighters of the team to develop each fighter for competition. All fight team members will receive approximately $1,000 in fight gear from BJMUTA MMA team sponsors.
Previous fight experience is not required, but strongly encouraged. We are looking for individuals over the age of 18 with formal martial arts training and most importantly, those who are dedicated.
When: Saturday, August 30th – check in time is at 11:00AM
Where: Big John McCarthy's Ultimate Training Academy located at 25385 Rye Canyon Road in Valencia, California.
What: Open MMA team tryouts – please bring MMA gloves, boxing gloves, shin pads, athletic supporter, mouthpiece and running shoes. Candidates will be tested in the following areas; kickboxing, grappling, wrestling, MMA and conditioning.

We
have a brand new schedule up online! Due to demand, we made changes
to Monday and Wednesday Brazilian Jiu Jitsu gi class. Judo for kids
will also be on Wednesday following Kids Brazilian Jiu Jitsu from 5:00
to 6:00PM. Mark Mireles and Jim Johnson are teaming up on Monday nights
from 8:30 to 9:30 to put on an awesome weekly MMA class! Make sure not
to miss it each Monday night. MMA Fight Team (5-0) fighter, Levi Kurtovich
will be heading up the Wednesday night MMA class from 8:30 to 9:30.
Last, but not least, each Monday and Wednesday, CrossFit will be instructed
by newly certified CrossFit instructor, Mike Dear. Make sure not to
miss the all new line up on Monday & Wednesday nights at Big John
McCarthy’s Ultimate Training Academy!
Big John McCarthy's Ultimate Training Academy kickboxing instructor, Hector "The Aztec" Warrior Pena will be defending his title in a full Muay Thai rules kickboxing match at Pechanga Resort and Casino. The WCK event will start at 7:00PM on Saturday, July 19th.
Hector will be defending his International Super Welterweight Title against Kongnapa.

Neal Abrams is keeping up his winning streak going with a 1st round submission in Total Fighting Alliance this last Saturday. Neal fought a tough opponent, Ben Gonzalez, in a lightweight match (155 lbs) at the Pyramid in Cal State Long Beach. The fight was action packed from the start with both opponents throwing and landing strikes before Neal landed in Ben's open guard. Ben opened Neal with an elbow to the face and Neal quickly lashed back with a straight foot lock from Ben's open guard. It was all over from there as Neal secured the foot lock and forced his opponent to tap out.

The Big Ass Fan is installed!! After months of waiting we finally have a Big Ass Fan installed and in operation in Big John McCarthy's Ultimate Training Academy! The fan is located above the main mat, right behind the UFC octagon and will help keep the facility up to 16 degrees cooler during summer! Not only will the Big Ass Fan keep the academy cooler during summer months, but will also help keep it warm during the winter. The academy has a ceiling height of over 30 feet and during the winter it is not uncommon for the temperature to differ 20ºF from ceiling to floor. The Big Ass Fan has a setting to gently drive that hot ceiling-level air down to the floor.

Gina Carano was in
the academy last week for a photo shoot with ESPN. She took sometime to
sign our “scale of fame” in the front of the academy.

Neal Abrams will be fighting again in January; this time in Southern California for Total Fighting Alliance (TFA) in Santa Monica. The fight is scheduled for Saturday, January 19th. Tickets will be for sale at BJMUTA starting on 12/7/07 and start at $30.00.
Congratulations to all who went to Las Vegas on December 1st to compete in Grapplers Quest. Representing BJMUTA in Las Vegas was; Mike Briones, Levi Kurtovich, BJ Gobran, Carlos Gonzalez, Jesse Rodriguez and Felicia Oh. They all trained very hard and we are very proud of all of them. Mike Briones took 1st in his division and Felicia won the women’s’ absolute division.
Hector has another match planed in early January at the Ballagio in Las Vegas, NV. Stay tuned!

On September 1st, the BJMUTA mixed martial arts team came up big on the Hostility MMA fights in Ventura. Levi Kurtovich won in the 1st round at two minutes and forty-three seconds by referee stoppage due to strikes from the mount position. Vinc Pichel won by submission via armbar in the first round at two minutes thirteen seconds. Chris Cook won by submission via armbar in the first round at one minute and forty-seven seconds. Congratulations to all three of these fighters who absolutely dominated there fight!

Congratulations to BJMUTA instructors Felicia Oh and Brian Peterson for placing in the USA Wrestling Grappling World Team Trials held in Las Vegas on June 8th, 9th, and 10th. Felicia Oh took 1st place and will be going to Turkey in September of this year to represent the United States of America. Brian Peterson took 5th place in his 16 man bracket.

Congratulations to Oscar Valenzuela, BJ Gobran, Sonny Gobran, and Brian Peterson for competing in Grappler’s Quest on April 14th in Las Vegas, Nevada. Sonny Gobran placed 3rd and Brian Peterson placed 2nd earning him a spot on the World Teams.
Congratulations to Travis Henderson, Jake Solley, and Eric Cohen on their performance at the Bakersfield Coyote Classic Wrestling Tournament. Both Jake and Eric placed 2nd in there division.
BJMUTA instructor Mark Mireles has an article in the May issue of
Black Belt Magazine (photos with Jamie Walsh). It's a piece that contrasts wrestling techniques with BJJ reversals and escapes. Additionally, Mark just wrestled in the masters division of the United States National Wrestling Championships where Mark won the freestyle tournament and was the runner up in Greco Roman competitions. Congratulations to Robert Martinez, Jake Solley, and Eric Cohen on their performance at the Bakersfield Coyote Classic Wrestling Tournament. It was their first tournament ever and Big John McCarthy's Ultimate Training Academy was well represented by brining home two medals out of the three wrestlers that competed. Eric Cohen placed 2nd and Jake Solley placed 3rd. Awesome job!

BJ Penn will be at BJMUTA on Saturday, March 17th for a 4 hour seminar. The seminar will focus on BJJ in the Gi for two hours and then two hours on MMA The cost is $150.00 and spaces are very limited. It is with heavy hearts and our deepest regrets that we announce the loss of one of our own staff members here at Big John McCarthy’s Ultimate Training Academy. On October 23, 2006 Judo Master Steve Bell suffered a massive heart attack and passed away. Our thoughts and prayers are with Steve’s family as he will be forever missed, but always in our hearts. |
On Saturday, October 28th, Felicia Oh was in New Jersey for the North American Abu Dhabi women's qualifiers and is proud to say she is the 2006 ADCC North American Submission Grappling Trials Champion 55kg Winner! Congrads Felicia.
